Sheng Xiang Bakery

Sheng Xiang Bakery

In the days when little resource was available in Taiwan, the frugal Hakka people made use of the inexpensive mung bean to create a delicious cake filling. The moon-shaped cakes were sometimes given a nipple-like appearance to make them easier for infants to eat, and were known variously as mung bean cake, belly button cake and nipple cake. With a history of more than 80 years, Sheng Xiang now meets the modern demand for health with their belly button cakes, which use a filling of mung bean and maltose for reduced fat and sugar and are hand baked for. Their sweet, aromatic and fluffy belly button cakes are filled with a mixture of fried shallots, candied winter melon, lard, bean paste and ground peanut, not only tasting superb but also evoking an image of old Hakka.
